Monthly Training Tips

January 2010

Although I mentioned this last year, I thought it prudent to do so again this year. Due to the number of reported dog attacks, that have occurred in recent months.

1. When out walking your dog, your dog should be leashed. You are allowed only to exercise your dog unleashed, in areas, set aside for that purpose, by your local council. Your dog must be under continuous control, at all times. If your dog is easily distracted and doesn't obey your commands ie; doesn't come when called, keep your dog leashed. Check with your local council for: Dog prohibited areas, Leash controlled areas and areas where your dog can be exercised unleashed but under continuous control. Children should never take their dog for a walk unless accompanied by an adult because they do not have the presence of mind or strength to act quickly enough if a situation occurs: such as an encounter with a stray dog.

2. Never take your dog out without a leash, surprising how many people do, even if you are in an off - leash area or on quite country road, you should
have the means to restrain your dog, if neccessary. While your dog may listen to you on a one to one basis, it may not, if distracted say by another dog. leashed or otherwise. A dog fight may insue and all parties may get bitten. Grabbing hold of it by the collar is not an effective means of control. You must have total control of your dog if you intend to exercise your dog unleashed. People, especially children may become frightened if an unleashed dog comes bounding up to them. Not all people love dogs.
